The bolt carrier travels back and forth with every shot: it chambers the round, fires it and ejects the spent case. The charging handle chambers the first round by hand, while the hammer, trigger and safety parts govern when firing occurs. Working under constant friction and impact, their surface hardness and dimensional stability are critical.
